| The Movement > Who are we? > Structure |
|
The Green Movement has a structure that is a combination of "flat" and "hierarchical". This may sound strange but closer analysis will show that such an environment can exist. The ideology of the Greens attracts multi-talented people who not only enjoy but actually excel in working across multiple disciplines and multiple tasks. The holistic approach to effort also means that the best person to do a particular job is usually allowed to take the lead and this in turn leads to a very flat structured work mode. Despite this, the Greens also have a very firm hierarchical structure in place that was the outcome of a re-thinking of strategy in early 2007 after the chaos that existed in the immediate post-tsunami area. The GMSL feels that it has managed the difficult task of bridging these two structures for optimal effect. Given below is the hierarchy as it was reformulated on 2007. |
|
Tradition over fad, custom over law, heart over mind... The Green Movement has risen above many groups less for its ability to "conform" to accepted norms of "doing things" but rather, because it has always done what it "felt" was right. Perhaps, for the Greens, "Organization" is not "Organic" enough? |

The organizational structure of the Green Movement is based on four major units, namely, "Legal Unit", "Information, Education and Media Unit", "Network Unit" and "Campaigns Unit". Taking the first letter of each, these abbreviate to the "LINC". They comprise the "executive arm" of the GMSL and provide their resources to the various practical actions that are executed by staff members and associates. The LINC provides these services to the six programs, namely "Natural Resource Conservation and Management"(NRCM), "International Financial Institutes Watch" (IFIW), "Sustainable Agriculture Program" (SAP), "Consumer Watch Program" (CWP), "Disaster Management and Information Program" (DMIP) and the "Consolidated Action Program" (CAS). Each of the program heads manage projects coming under their purview and work out logistics with the heads of the LINC. The programs are the action arm of the GMSL and the Units are the services arm that helps the programs to im plement actions. Below, figure 1 and 2 is the relationship between the LINC and the programs. |

| The projects of the GMSL are based on three core ideas, namely, "Research and Information", "Practice and Action" and "Education and Training". These ideas are exercised through a spectrum of efforts outlined below in figure 3. |
