Conference series on aid effectiveness - day one summary
2010.09.01 11:09:10

The Green Movement in cooperation with the Asia Pacific Research Network is holding a national consultation on CSO Development Effectiveness. CSOs are concerned about development effectiveness as a broader, wider-reaching and more sustainable concept than aid effectiveness - the impact of the actions of development actors on improving the lives of the poor and marginalised; and the promotion of sustainable positive change that addresses, within a democratic framework, the root causes as well as the symptoms of poverty, inequality and marginalisation.

It is in this light that the Open Forum for CSO Development Effectiveness was conceptualized as an international CSO-driven process towards coming up with a global development effectiveness framework and enabling environments for CSOs through consultations with CSOs and other development actors.

The first event in the series is the Sri Lanka Country Consultation on CSO Development Effectiveness: 31st August – 2nd September 2010.

Work continues in the north…
2010.08.17 07:19:13

The Green Movement is working in a resettled village close to Vavuniya town by the name of Katpakkapuram. Families from many districts are being resettled there and they currently face many difficulties including very limited access to water and no sanitation facilities. Some are lucky enough to live close to one of the few wells, others have to walk far to collect water. Either way, there is not enough water to drink, bathe and start agricultural livelihoods. More families are arriving all the time and the plan is to resettle 2000 families in total. The Green Movement has carried out assessments and surveys on the village together with the villagers and two weeks ago started to work with partner organizations to construct temporary toilets for the village. We are planning to implement en emergency response program in this village, including construction of more toilets, wells, temporary shelters and holding a health camp as soon as possible.

Vote for our project funding to be approved

We have applied for funding through an exciting new initiative to reduce energy emissions which would enable us to introduce energy efficient stoves and an awareness program in this village. This initiative would mean that families need less firewood for cooking, meaning less vegetationis cut down, less smoke is emitted into the air in the kitchen and overall emissions are reduced. In conjunction with the awareness program, women would learn how to improve efficiency in the kitchen, saving time, money and other resources.

This funding will be awarded to us if our project can get the most votes from individuals around the world. Please take two minutes to read more about this project, register and vote for our project online. You can read more about this project here

Youth: the key to our future
2010.08.13 07:27:41

From the beginning, we could tell this would be a special training program. The Green Movement of Sri Lanka's first non-emergency program of the Northern Province was held in Vavuniya for selected youths from Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar and Vavuniya as the first step towards these youth becoming environmental and peace ambassadors in their own communities and districts. From the youths who have never before seen a train or been to a city, to those who have lost loved ones and more, this group provides a snapshot of youths in the conflict-affected area of this country.

Of course, no part of this country has been untouched by the conflict: it is very real in the hearts and minds of all Sri Lankans, whether they live here or elsewhere. But in order to start breaking down the barriers that the conflict caused and was caused by, we have to work with people who may have been directly affected by it, as well as those who were not. That is why the Green Movement is currently putting more energy into its initiatives in the North.

The atmosphere in the training centre is electric and there is a sense of impatience in the air - there is a definite feeling that this group will step up to the task of strengthening the Green Movement's network and engagement in the north. We have given these youths the chance to make a difference - now it is up to them to make the most of this chance. We have great hope for them. Watch this space for the next update of what is happening with the Green Brigade groups in the North and countrywide.

A new website, new possibilities
2010.07.05 07:19:09

The process of updating our website has taken longer than expected and we hope that you will agree that the finished product is worth the wait. The finished product is still not 100% accessible as we are still in the process of uploading data. There will eventually be more pages, documents, videos, photos and all kinds of information to give a better picture of the movement, and to provide an information bank and several interactive features to make this website a dynamic, relevant resource as well as our homepage. The Green Movement of Sri Lanka is longing for our new website as much as you are so we hope to make this a reality within the shortest period possible! Thanks for taking the time to check out our website and read our blog, and we promise there will be a lot more happening here from now on.
