Green People - Staff
There are many people involved in the Green Movement in Sri Lanka, whether one is discussing the organisation or the concept. As well as a dedicated and experienced staff (see Green Staff below), people across the country are involved in protecting the environment and encouraging sustainable development of their country. These individuals come from diverse backgrounds and each have their own individual way of making a difference (see Green Individuals below). The third group is the Green Movement's member base, comprising NGOs, CBOs and other groups across the country (see Green Organizations below).

D. R. Gunaratne

D. R. Gunaratne
 Mr. Gunaratne is an industrial engineering consultant who has worked in this sector since 1975. During the eighties while working at the Ministry of Labour he became a member of the Organisation for Safeguarding Life and the Environment (OSLEN).  He is also a visiting lecturer at several institutions in Sri Lanka and an expert in occupational health and safety. Despite a heavy professional workload, he has been active in environmental conservation, the reduction of GHGs, industrial safety and other sustainable development initiatives of the industrial sector. Despite his experience and prominent position, Mr. Gunaratne has a simple way of life and advocates serious involvement of all citizens in environment-sensitive life activities.

 

T. G. Pushpalal Indika

T. G. Pushpalal Indika

Mr. Indika is a young man with a great attitude. He is based in the Sinharaja forest, which is a world heritage site and a chief location of environment conservation in Sri Lanka. He runs an organization called ‘Sinharaja Sumithuro’ and he has mobilized many youth to work together in conserving and regenerating this earth critical natural phenomenon. He is an exemplary conservationist and a refreshing contrast to those many time-servers who just work within a “project mentality” who generally give up everything within a short period after the “project is completed”. Embodying the highest sense of fairness and sensitivity to the sum total of global trauma while working within frameworks where just effort is justly rewarded for the good of the people, he is an example to the youth of our country.
Mr. Dissanayake

Mr. Dissanayake
 Mr. Dissanayake is head of the Methsewana rehabilitation centre for female minor offenders and women with severe mental disabilities. He father to 2 girls and has become like a father to many of the vulnerable women in this centre. He is a government officer but he works beyond his call of duty. He actively ensures that the centre uses an environmental approach and he has very good, personal contact with the offenders and their children. Because the centre does not have the capacity to support the vulnerable women and children, he is on a never-ending search for volunteers to support their work and is passionate about ensuring the successful re-integration into society of the women after they leave the centre. Although his mandate is working with the women in the centre, he makes sure that the young children are not ignored and is working to develop an early childhood program.

 

Saman C. Liyanage

Saman. C. Liyanage Saman is a reporter from Galle who is actively working on Southern Transport Development Project issues to raise awareness. He is active in the field mobilizing people at the village level and campaigning against the STDP project. Whenever incidents occur he goes straight to the field to take pictures and write articles on the latest developments and these are published in the papers within a few days. Working with a novel method, he has set up bulletin boards at bus stops across the Galle district where he highlights issues through articles and posters. A creative and sensitive man, he is an inspiration to all though who work for the re-establishment of a green economic paradigm in Sri Lanka.
Premadasa Gurusingha

Premadasa Gurusingha
 Mr. Premadasa Gurusingha is a member of the Indigenous Seeds Preservation Society and contributes to the preservation of traditional paddy seeds by growing, distributing and promoting them. His service to the preservation of indigenous paddy seeds is both remarkable and admirable. He is involved in many social initiatives including the effort to re-build the conflict-affected Mahawelithanna village.

 

Venerable Mamankadawala Piyarathana himi

Venerable Mamankada Piyarathana himi This prominent activist is well-known as Eppawala Hamuduruwo. He was one of the significant contributors to protecting the Eppawala phosphate deposit. During the campaign, he mobilized people and always stood together with the people. He has a great empathy for people and environment. He has his own, brash, direct, honest and wholly inimitable way of dealing with people, no matter how rich or how powerful you are, and always works in his way.     
Whenever environmentally destructive activities are ongoing, he informs the Movement as well as the relevant government authorities to take action.  He is a vigilant social watchdog, always raising his voice against injustice as is his nature.
G. K. Upawansa

G. K. Upawansa This exemplary human being studied almost every “fashionable” system of agriculture in his youth and, with the advent of global economic action and market aggression of a few multinational organizations, he used the knowledge he acquired reading for a higher degree at the Aberdeen University in Great Britain to further their cause in Sri Lanka as an honest, knowledgeable but unwitting pawn of the “global system”. As such, he advocated reductionist agriculture based on chemical inputs but subsequently, as all great thinkers and doers, he recognized his folly as well as the true worth of traditional systems of agriculture and became of the most respected voices for agrarian reform towards holistic agro-cultural lifestyles. He played an invaluable role in introducing bio-gas technology to Sri Lanka and also contributed to develop environment friendly farming techniques. He is also a highly sought-after consultant on organic farming and brings the insights of a lifetime to bear in giving salient advice to all who sought it – including the GMSL. As an author and an ambassador for the country, he has given yeoman service to the natural agriculture sector of Sri Lanka and is one of those rare individuals who is green not only in theory but also in action.

H. M. Premawardhana

H. M. Premawardhana

Despite the fact that he is elderly, this energetic and enthusiastic man still works as an expert in traditional medicinal knowledge and techniques. He also strives to conserve traditional farming tools and techniques. Additionally, he works to preserve and promote indigenous yam varieties and is an active member of the indigenous yam preservation society and maintains the only existing indigenous yam store in Sri Lanka. This passionate gentleman preserves traditional farming tools and displays them in his home.  At present, he works with the audio visual unit of the Agriculture Department to promote traditional farming systems and indigenous medical practices. Marahela Vedamahaththaya is a selfless visionary who adheres to environmental principles and always thinks about the wellbeing of others. He has many scholars including university students, teachers and even professors. He is involved in the GMSL effort to re-build the conflict-affected Mahawelithanna village.
D. M. T. B Dasanayake

D. M. T. B. Dasanayaka Mr. Dasanayaka was an excellent government officer and has been a consultant to the Consumer Affairs Authority. Authorities tend to ignore consumer rights but this man stands for them, fearless against the formidable and corrupt forces arraigned against him. He has a renowned academic background and also has wide practical experience in dealing with consumer issues. Therefore he is a significant individual in the context of the fight for consumer rights in Sri Lanka. He is also a well-recognized writer and published a book titled “The Sri Lankan consumer in the new millennium” in 2009. He has received many awards for his contribution to protecting consumer rights.
Piyasena Benthota

 Mr. Benthota is an experienced campaigner in the field of environment conservation and human rights. He lost his job in 1980 due to engagement in labour unions. At the time when he was a school teacher, he was also an active human rights advocate, always working for the people. He founded the community for people’s rights. Benthota has also been widely recognised for his valiant service to conserve and promote the traditional rush and reed industry. He created a museum for the promotion of rush and reed products. The centre consists of a comprehensive information base on the rush and reed industry including practical techniques. He has held many national and regional training programs for women on rush and reed products.
Dr. Chamindi Kumaratunga

No picture on request Dr. Chamindi is a volunteer who works for the wellbeing of children with physical disabilities. As well as working as a doctor and being a full time mother, she is a kind, diligent and tireless activist who contributes greatly to support vulnerable groups. In her free time, she also contacts pharmaceutical companies and other organisations to request for free medicines to support social action, and constantly visits vulnerable groups to offer support and advice that they desperately need.
S. Darshana

No picture on request Mr. Darshana joined hands with us to fight against politicians and businessmen to preserve the environmentally critical Magama-Kirinda sand deposit. He mobilizes people and continuously pressures the political system against granting permission to carry out sand mining. Despite the fact that he was assaulted while campaigning for the cause, he has never given up. Therefore, he is significant contributor to our victory over giant businessmen and corrupt politicians.
