| The Green Movement of Sri Lanka carries out its work from grass roots action to policy and lobbying efforts through its ten programs. Although these programs are defined as separate entities, in reality their work is very much interrelated and no one program operates independently. It is this integrated approach to sustainable development which gives the GMSL the ability to engage in meaningful, effective and truly sustainable work that takes into account the true needs of Sri Lanka’s citizens.
The Green Movement is a complex organ - with a simple mandate: the establishment of a high quality way of life that is enjoyed to the fullest by the majority of citizens. To do this, we educate people, insist that people educate us, leverage media machinery, lobby the government and create synergic linkages amongst those who are most able to make a difference to the lives of all. While we protest against the wasteful, the greedy, the slothful and the destructive we always have alternative means of achieving the same ends as those who advocate environment and people unfriendly practices - with none of the ill effects.
However, it is not all that easy to take a good thought from the drawing board to the ground quickly, easily, with little fuss and optimal rate of success. Our results have been mixed. |

We have achieved great things by small deeds and once in a while every action on our part has proved futile. Our failures have given us strength and knowledge on how to deal with the future. Our successes we do not dwell on too much for it is better, if the need by some reason arises, to let those we helped do the talking. Above all, we have gone into this field of turmoil and stratagem with as much honesty, spirit and heart as we can muster and we have steadfastly maintained our dignity and the dignity of those that we have worked so hard to succor in their need.
Our activities range from helping a single human being live a better quality life to protecting the life of a single tree all the way to macrocosmic efforts to make an entire nation or region aware of the threat of "marketed" ideas of "civilization", "poverty reduction", "resource usage", "environment protection" and much more. In all our activities, we don't merely voice our protest at unfairness but we also work towards fairness. Again we say, we do not merely stand in the way of so-called progress but provide practical, useable, useful, less wasteful alternatives that will provide our country with development that is both sustainable and non-destructive.
