EXHIBITION, BOOK LAUNCH and TEACHING SESSION on WORLD FOOD DAY 2008

The Island - World Food Day - Article

We've talked the talk. 10 full years of it. But what we have done that no one else has done is to walk the talk. This is not a time for people to be sitting around conference tables or workshop forums. We all know the challenges that Sri Lanka faces and the Greens has proved, over the last four years exactly how they can overcome them to 10,000 rural families. Great work but not good enough by our standards. Now is the time that we can demonstrate are ultra-successful mechanisms to the nation at large. Those in the government sector agree and they have given us the fullest support to organize a huge exhibition on methods and means to solve the existing crisis in food that the nation is facing. Visit us at the National Youth Centre in Maharagama and see for yourself how you can change your idea of how to live a civilized life to the betterment of you, your family and your community.

The key events:

An exhibition named “Digasiri Genena Sobadam Ahara” (Natural foods that bring longevity)
This will be spread over two days and held at the Maharagama Youth Centre. It will be based on a time line that addresses the four thematic areas of

  • The holism of ancient systems
  • The breakdown of these systems through colonization
  • The ravages of market economics and the debt burden
  • The solutions to the food crisis in Sri Lanka

The timeline takes the visitor through a series of stalls that will give her a clear idea of the development of the current situation and will guide her through a series of practical, easy to implement, low cost solutions that will leave her full of hope and with a positive outlook to life. The solutions are unique in the modern context and have been innovated after three years of research, study, learning and sharing by the agrarian experts of the Green Movement with communities in 16 districts in Sri Lank representing all the climate zones. The visitor will be able to purchase books and audio-visual material that further explains the processes as well as join the GMSL’s holistic agrarian groups to further their practical action to execute their individual responsibilities in easing the stress on the planet.

A Seminar on achieving agro-biodiversity in the face of climate instability

  • This will bring some of the leading social networks engaged in holistic agriculture, key intellectuals and academics and representatives of key government institutions who will consolidate strategies for the next three years.

A book launch featuring some of the most innovative ideas of the Green Movement’s Food Sovereignty Program.

Four books will be launched as part of the Green Movement’s Aharaka Asiriya series.

  • Digasiri Genena Sobadam Ahara II
    • This is a book on low cost, high nutrition indigenous foods and is the second edition of the book. • Sobadama surakina parisara govikama
    • This is a book that outlines in the simplest of terms, mechanisms for regenerative agriculture that is both environment friendly and healthy for those who consume the produce. .
  • Saagini Nivana Kos Guna Varuna
    • The Jak fruit tree is one of the most astonishing food providers of nature. However, over the last three decades, aggressive marketing of inferior processed foods and cultural changes engineered by market economics that forced “nutrients” to replace wholesome foods has made this miracle food “unfashionable”. This book is an effort to bring back this food into mainstream consumption patters and contains many innovative recipes and techniques that were the outcome of research by the GMSL’s Food Sovereignty Program.
  • Bim Sekaseemen Thora Vee Vagava - G.K. Upawansa
    • Written by one of the best known experts in organic farming, this booklet outlines low cost, environment friendly and minimal water techniques for growing paddy and will be a leading knowledge source for paddy farmers in a resource restrictive future.
