"Home gardens" have become a kind of "buzz word" amongst a whole battery of NGOs. Many of these organizations boast a large portfolio of actives and practical results. The actuality is different. There are few if any claims made that can be substantiated on the ground. In short, they are all lying through their teeth. For what purpose? Just in order to justify the next round of aid for purposes that have little or nothing to do with the work for which those funds are being allocated by trusting donor agents.
"Organic farming" is also much in vogue. Pray, what IS organic farming? The definitions are many and the reality at ground zero is exactly that - a big round zero.
We beg to differ. We do not subscribe to things that are only as important as the "buzz" surrounding it and the aid hungry flies that are making all that racket.
Our ideas are steeped in social and cultural values that transcend the cheap and the mundane. We do not believe, but rather know, that reverting back to subsistence farming with all its attendant synergies and harmonies is the way to recapturing the health, dignity and self-worth of a nation almost completely stripped of all of those. We know that neither awareness creation amongst home owners nor bombarding them with planting materials will make anything positive happen in the long run. We know that long term involvement with the communities we are assisting as well as a carefully planned, incremental knowledge transmission mechanism coupled with material aid and area specific monitoring systems are required in order to sustain the idea of the value of small scale subsistence farming.
As we stated in our front page for agriculture, the whole exercise is an intertwined tapestry of awareness, corporation, resistance to negative marketing impact, resistance to market economics, espousal of holistic methods of life and living and above all, a high regard for quality interaction with nature and natural phenomena.
It is in order to achieve this end across the nation that we formed the concept of "Sustainable nutritional gardens" which are more than small plots where a few vegetables or flowering plants are grown. Rather, these strips, square and rounds of land are charged with the potential for regenerating life in dead things and reviving and rejuvenating the lives of half-dead human beings. They are mechanisms through which the entire citizenry of the country can sense, realize, appreciate and reap the figurative and literal fruit that is the undeniable product of a nurturing hand being nurtured by that which was nurtured by it in the first place. These gardens are not tangential flights into fancy but rather a completion of a sustained, harmonious circle. They are, by their very definition, "holistic", they are, by their practical outcomes, truly "wholesome".
