A simmering conflict explodes in madness and mayhem at Muttur
  Many believed the 2002 truce between the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was the beginning of the end of one of Asia's longest running wars, a conflict possibly best known for the LTTEs' use of suicide bombings and child soldiers. Sadly, it was not to be. With the closing of an anicut over the MavilA ru violence erupted again - forcing over 50,000 people to flee the area to refugee camps in Kantalai and surrounding areas. .  
 
The earth is in turmoil - A large crack in the top stratum of the of soil causes sinking of the land at Matale and earth-slips at Kotmale
  People living in an area in Matale first noticed that their houses were literally falling apart during … and this was subsequently determined to be the result of a crack across the earth from Kotmale to Trincomalee causing damage from sinking land to earth-slips.

The perennial problem of earth slips in this region are being addressed by the DMIP through information gathering, mapping and awareness creation activities in tandem with the campaigns unit of the GMSL.
 
   
The Asian tsunamis - National disaster on an unpresidented scale
 
When the waves thundered inland on the 26th of December 2006, the destroyed entire communities and their livelihoods. The GMSL joined the desperate battle to save lives through the DMIP and the volunteer brigade.
