Effectiveness

Becuase we were ready, we hit the ground running.

Unlike most other organizations we had a clear and well thought out plan of action right from the moment that disaster struck this nation down. The scale of the tragedy was too great for us to be able to realistically attempt to provide for the thousands that desperately needed a helping hand. what we did, as was outlined earlier was to provide immediate relief to communities that are perennially marginalized. With our partners behind us all the way, we provided what we could to as many of these discriminated peoples as possible.

We were the first with a Rapid Assessment Report on the ground situation and this subsequently became the UN report as well in substantial part. We somehow found the money and were the first to do a comprehensive Need Based Agriculture Impact Assessment which was handed over to the relevant ministry which should have done it in the first place. We were the first to perform a Dynamic Environmental Impact Assessment.

In fact, while others were posturing and waving sabers or attempting to make a buck out of a tragedy at the cost of the victims, we went to work. With our hands, our hearts, our knowledge, our meager wallets and our driving desire to do as much as we could to restore the dignity of those who had suffered.

We cleaned up, we re-designed, we started rebuilding - with whatever funds we hand and whatever funds came our way from people with a similar bent in thinking.

Sambodhi home debris - asian tsunamis

The debris of the Sambodhi home for the disabled in Galle. The extent of the devastation and the enormity of the rehabilitation effort had the dangerous effect of sliding even the stoutest of hearts into a whirlpool of despair and depression and the greens had to constantly guard against that.
We did this...

200 environment friendly houses across the tsunami belt - Yes they cost much more but you can't convert a cement block and asbestos house into a home with all the love in the world!

Continuous provision of water to 200,000 individuals in the Tirukkovil area where all the ground water was contaminated by saline

Vocational training for women in the affected areas

Provision of tools and gear to those who lost them in the tsunami as part of our sustainable livelihood recovery program

scholarships to children affected by the tragedy

Cleaning of wells in areas contaminated by saline

Cleaning up rubble and coastal eco-systems damaged by the tsunamis

We did this... with the wishes of the communities and their participation in the progress uppermost in our minds!
