Many natural disasters are no longer "natural" . Without a community centric disaster management policy mitigation efforts of the government will be doomed. Be prepared! Even if the government is not. Do not be hoodwinked by NGOs without a plan to help you help yourself. The problem with disaster assistance is that all such help has a "sell-by" date. Pay heed to the problems of your neighbour. They will help you in turn . Most trauma councelors create more trauma . Disasters will keep happening. Don't wait for others to make plans for you. Do it yourself! it will save your life.

Where ever and when ever disaster strikes, the Disaster Management and Information Program of the GMSL is geared for fast and telling intervention for mitigation purposes.

Be it rapid relief, gap filling or long-term recovery, the DMIP is able to mobilize our large youth groups as well as our expertise and experience in handling disasters to very good effect.

Sri Lanka, in the recent past has been at the beset by both natural and man made disasters. The DMIP was initially setup in response to the flood disasters in the Ratnapura district. However, it is constantly watching for trouble - be it drought, famine, floods, cyclones, tornados or tsunamis. over and above responding quickly and meaningfully to disasters, many preventive measures have been taken by the teams in anticipation of the possibility of disaster.

Since the mega-tragedy of the Asian Tsunamis the activities of the DMIP have had to expanded to almost impossible proportions and our young team is to be commended for their massive efforts to ensure that the lives of those affected by trauma are made easier.

As with all our work, participatory mechanisms are the base from which all our post-disaster interventions as well as early warning systems are set up.
